Description

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) TURP is a surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland enlarges and causes urinary problems. It is considered the gold standard for treating moderate to severe BPH symptoms when medications are ineffective. Indications for TURP Difficulty urinating Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia) Weak urine stream or interrupted flow Incomplete bladder emptying Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to obstruction Urinary retention requiring catheterization Procedure Overview Anesthesia: Spinal or general anesthesia is used. Resection: A resectoscope (thin tube with a camera and cutting loop) is inserted through the urethra. The excess prostate tissue is shaved away using an electrical loop. The removed tissue is flushed out with irrigation fluid. Catheterization: A urinary catheter is placed for a few days to help with healing and drainage. Duration: Usually 60–90 minutes Hospital Stay: Typically 1–2 days Post-Operative Care Urinary catheter: Kept in place for 24–48 hours Hydration: Helps flush out any remaining debris Activity restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for a few weeks Medication: Pain relievers and antibiotics may be prescribed Follow-up: Regular check-ups to monitor recovery and urination Potential Complications Bleeding (common but usually resolves) Urinary incontinence (temporary in most cases) Retrograde ejaculation (semen flows into the bladder instead of exiting) Urinary tract infection (UTI) Stricture formation (scar tissue causing narrowing of the urethra)
